What is Yoga Nidra?

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga nidra is an effective meditation tool for recovery. Some scientific studies suggest yoga nidra helps reduce stress, worry, depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. It improves sleep, especially if you experience insomnia. It improves the immune response. The reason why yoga nidra is so effective is because it helps the body to access the delta brainwave state during a restorative state throughout the meditation. During the delta brainwave state, the brain releases neurotransmitters (GABA, dopamine, serotonin, oxycontin, and endorphins. It also releases melatonin and human growth hormone (HGH)). Cortisol and norepinephrine are reduced during yoga nidra.

You can do yoga nidra every day, even twice a day. It allows you to experience a full sleep cycle in one guided yoga nidra. Some people fall asleep immediately and stay asleep during the entire yoga nidra. That is best. Others doze off in and out of sleep during the yoga nidra meditation. There are some who stay awake during the entire meditation and that is okay too. There is no right or wrong way to do yoga nidra. The intention is to rest while doing the yoga nidra. You want to be as comfortable as possible when you do the yoga nidra. You want to try and sleep during the meditation.

It is important to set an intention when you do yoga nidra. In my meditations on Insight Timer, I set the intentions for you. You can also set your own. Examples of intentions are “I am recovering from …,” “I am killing and releasing pathogens in my body,” or “I am releasing emotionally.” You can set this before doing the yoga nidra or set it during the part where you set the intention during the yoga nidra.
